Sightseers Movie Review

I was told Sightseers was a dark comedy, that actually delivered. Although I don’t agree with that statement, Sightseers isn’t a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination and actually does have some funny, twisted bits, that left me laughing. It won’t be for everyone, but I might be able to convince you to give it a watch, by having you read my review. So let’s go on a murderous road trip together, by reading on…

Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as followsChris wants to show girlfriend Tina his world, but events soon conspire against the couple and their dream caravan holiday takes a very wrong turn.

Tatlock’s Quick ‘n Dirty Recap: Tina is a quiet, quirky, verrrry quirky girl, who lives at home with her overbearing mother. Today is a special day for Tina, as her newish boyfriend, Chris, a reserved man, who has dark thoughts boiling just under the surface, is taking her on a week long vacation through the countryside, visiting different spots and basically shagging like crazy in their caravan.

It isn’t long however, before things turn sour and the bodies start popping up around Chris. He doesn’t take too kindly to people who litter, act snobby, or are being an all around prat. Tina on the other hand, doesn’t notice Chris for who is and is oblivious to the murderous rampage she is heading on. However, Chris doesn’t really know who Tina is and she goes about showing him exactly what she can do, in a crazy and often times humorous manner.

Tatlock’s Opinion: I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to like Sightseers when it started. I was told it was funny and so far, the minutes where ticking by and I was barely laughing. However, once some initial hurdles are jumped, the movie does crank out some pretty funny and dark bits. The story itself is fairly basic, but the performances by Steve Oram and Alice Lowe are what sell the show, especially Alice Lowe’s Tina, who has a child’s like innocence to everything that’s happening around her.

The ending may leave some a little disappointed (no spoilers here), but I will admit I rather enjoyed it. It left a few questions up in the air, but if you watch the movie close enough, you might be able to pick up on what is going to happen after the credits roll. Also, quick nod to the John Carpenteresque music that pops up every now and then. Pretty sweet stuff.

Verdict: Sightseers isn’t the end all, be all, of dark humour, but it does a good enough job to keep me laughing at parts I probably shouldn’t be laughing at. Also, the acting from both Steve and Alice is phenomenal and the sudden ending that comes up on you, was twisted and I rather enjoyed that.
