Alone, pregnant and your mother in law is a bitch. That’s pretty much the worst place a soon to be mother can be in, and that’s exactly the situation Francesca (Patty Duke) finds herself facing. However, she also has the added fun of dealing with a rapist hiding somewhere in the dark, cold gothic mansion she is being held hostage at – things are looking bleak for Francesca. You’ll Like My Mother, released on Blu-ray from Scream Factory, is a slow burn thriller that unfortunately doesn’t know when to keep certain things a secret. It starts off good, but wears thin during the middle half as all the secrets are let out of the bag, but slightly comes back around at the conclusion. Whether you end up enjoying You’ll Like My Mother comes from whether you can stand a movie that creeps along at a snail’s pace. As for me, it was a rough ride, but one that wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Read on to see what I mean…

When her husband is killed in Vietnam, Francesca Kinsolving (Duke) finds herself alone… and pregnant. She makes her way to Minnesota in order to meet her late husband’s mother, certain that she’ll be greeted with open arms. But Francesca soon discovers that there may be more to the Kinsolving family than she ever imagined… and that this simple family reunion is only the beginning of a waking nightmare.

Francesca’s husband has recently passed away and she decides to visit his mother, who he proclaimed she would like. Francesca is about ready to pop with a baby, but she isn’t visiting the mother for money or anything, but just to see her. Immediately upon meeting Mrs. Kinsolving, you know she is evil. It could be the fact that she flatly tells Francesca that it’s a bad time to visit as she just had to drown some kittens. Yep, pure evil indeed.
Mrs. Kinsolving is hesitant about believing Francesca is pregnant with her son’s baby, but that’s just her being a mean old coot. After the rude meeting, Francesca decides it’s best to leave, but gets snowed in and is forced to stay in this big house. Fortunately, she befriends her late husband’s sister, Kathleen (Sian Barbara Allen) a mute girl who has obviously been abused. Kathleen helps Francesca try to escape multiple times, but because of the sudden birth of her child, she is stuck there for the long haul. If that wasn’t bad enough, a mysterious and dangerous man is lurking in the shadows of the house.
You’ll Like My Mother becomes hard to get through once certain story threads are revealed too early. Had they kept them frozen for a bit longer, the suspense of what will happen would have been maintained, but having revealed their hand so early, you already know where the movie is headed halfway through. However, having said that, the look of the film is to die for. The mansion, with its creepy and dark atmosphere, gives the film a dreadful tone that the film would not have had otherwise if it was shot elsewhere. The acting is also top notch, with Patty Duke stealing the show as the newly crowned mother in distress.

You’ll Like My Mother on Blu-ray is going to impress a lot of fans. It’s got solid video and audio (I feel like I use that term a lot). It’s a film with a lot of blacks and whites, and there are no issues with black crush or high contrast. The single big special feature included in this release is a whopping 55-minute interview with stars Richard Thomas and Sian Barbara Allen. It’s highly informative and a treat to sit through. Rounding everything out is a photo gallery and trailer.

You’ll Like My Mother is a lot like taking a long walk through a snowstorm. It starts off alright, but once you realize that for the next hour it’s just going to be snow and more snow, you get bored very quickly. (Okay, that analogy was terrible.) You’ll Like My Mother had the goods to be an effective thriller, but the goods were provided way too quickly. At least the fans of the flick have a kickass Blu-ray on their hands, so that is a big plus in my book.
