I have yet to read the Max Brooks book World War Z, so I can in no way compare the movie World War Z to the book. So, don’t expect any of that. However, going in blind, allowed me to see the movie for what is and what is it you make be asking? Well, it’s a freaking amazing zombie movie, that’s what it is! Read on for true undead experience…

time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and
governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
I’ve gotta say, I was going with some slight trepidation based on what I saw in the trailer, which only showed you small glimpses of the creatures in the movie and they were always CGI. Thankfully, you can count me as super surprised, to see that movie actually refers to these creatures as zombies and the CGI is super minimal and only used for the necessary scenes, such as the running hoard/climbing craziness. The movie actually has a great amount of practical makeup effects and it’s glorious. So, no crappy I am Legend shit going on here. Yay!!
So, what’s the movie about? Well, besides zombies suddenly uprising and attacking the world, we follow Gerry Lane, played by Brad Pitt, as he at first struggles to get his family to safety, after the outbreak and then finds himself tagging along on a world wide journey, to find out exactly what caused this epidemic and see if they can figure out how to stop it. The story is exciting and constantly moving and never once feels slow or boring. It’s an almost two hour movie and it felt like it flew by in a few minutes (that’s a good thing).
I do have to say there are moments where believability kinda flies out the window and you just gotta accept what’s happening and take it a face value. It didn’t really bother me too much, but it might make a few people groan, when something happens that will make you shake your head. Also, I’m really wishing we could’ve got to see more of the actual zombie fighting that is shown at certain points. It looked to be pretty spectacular and it only makes me hope for another movie in this series, where they can show other sides of the conflict. I adored this universe and I really want to spend more time in it.
Besides some honest to god perfect acting, we also get some truly beautiful music to move everything along smoothly. It’s at times heart racing and other times sorrow, often reminding me of the mesmerizing 28 Days Later soundtrack. Perfect score in my opinion.
So, the movie is pretty much the edge of your seat experience any zombie fan can ask for. The only thing that might really piss you zombie fans off, is the lack of gore. Due to the PG-13 rating, violence is at an all time low. However, the movie didn’t need to be gory and I personally was not offended by the lack of the plasma and I don’t think you should be either.
World War Z surprised me in the best way possible. It turned out to be a true zombie experience, with thrills, chills and a captivating story. The acting and soundtrack cap everything off and only a few things bring the score down a tiny bit. Zombie fans and horror fans alike, you owe it to yourself to watch World War Z. You will not be disappointed.
