The Trail of Dracula – Review (Severin Films DVD)

The Trail of Dracula is a 60-minute documentary that documents the history of the infamous Dracula (duh!). Featuring several interviews with many highly knowledgeable people in the field of vampires, film and novels. It starts things off with some history about Bram Stoker’s popular book Dracula and delves into the origins of Stoker’s ideas. The documentary then proceeds to go through several decades of Dracula’s appearance in all sorts of mediums. Unfortunately, the documentary stops just shy of getting into Dracula’s films in the 80s and onward.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Diabolical. Seductive. Immortal. Vampires have been an icon of evil in folklore and popular culture for more than three centuries, yet only one name still personifies the ultimate aristocrat of bloodlust. Now join the world’s foremost experts on Dracula – including academics, authors and horror historians – as they explore the untold story of the Transylvanian Count, from the legend of Vlad The Impaler and Bram Stoker’s celebrated novel through its landmark stage productions and classic movie adaptations. It’s a crimson trail of twisted archival materials, startling film clips and rare interviews – featuring Bela Lugosi, John Carradine and Christopher Lee – plus Bonus Materials that include additional interviews with Udo Kier and Werner Herzog, over 90 minutes of Dracula movie trailers, and more!

REVIEW

The Trail of Dracula would have benefited greatly by extending the running time and breaking down even more Dracula films from the 1980’s and on. Instead, the interviews gloss over the later films. Thankfully, though, if you’re a fan of the Bela Lugosi and Hammer Horror films of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, you are in for a big treat.

Besides the 60-minute documentary, we have an astounding 94 minutes of Dracula trailers to wet our bloody appetite. I have to say, the best one for me was Sexcula. That looks damn good. Also included on the disc is a few short interviews. One of the features listed below (Christopher Lee Reads Bram Stoker’s Dracula) I do not remember seeing on the disc. How I could have missed that, I do not know.

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Over 90 Minutes of DRACULA Movie Trailers
  • Christopher Lee Reads Bram Stoker’s Dracula
  • Video Interview With Werner Herzog
  • Audio Interviews With Christopher Lee, Udo Kier, Alexander D’Arcy and Francis Lederer

VERDICT

Fans of the immortal Dracula character are going to fall head over heels with The Trail of Dracula. I do wish it was a bit longer to allow it to delve into newer films. Nevertheless, the 60-minutes we do get are fantastic. Pile on 94 minutes of Dracula trailers and you got a DVD worth owning.
