Lake Nowhere – Movie Review

Do you remember the good old days of VHS horror films? Rooting through boxes and finding the perfect flick to watch? Popping in the VHS and hoping that the VCR does not decide to up and eat the tape?Remember rotating the tracking dial to get a somewhat decent video? Man, those days were a blast. It is because of this nostalgia that Lake Nowhere succeeds brilliantly in capturing the glory days of hazy video and tracking issues. It also succeeds in providing a horror film that is full of blood, guts, beautiful babes and boobs. For anyone longing for the past, Lake Nowhere is here to bloody up the viewers day. Read on to see if you agree.

PLOT SUMMARY

When a group of friends arrive at a desolate lakeside cabin, they are stalked and murdered by a Masked Maniac, whose lust for blood transcends our world. This age-old tale of senseless slaughter quickly spirals into the realm of supernatural horror and classic monster movies, as we learn the true power that lies within LAKE NOWHERE.

MOVIE REVIEW

Copy of LAKE NOWHERE - Still 4Borrowing just a bit from the Grindhouse movies, Lake Nowhere starts things off with a few fake trailers for older fake horror films and beer. One trailer titled Harvest Man, looks like it could be a fun full-length feature. After the fun opening scenes, we get into the meat of the film titled Lake Nowhere.

A group of friends head out to a cabin by the lake to smoke, drink and get down and dirty; however, there is something in the woods that feeds on the blood of the living and it is quite hungry. After a friend vanishes while swimming naked, who turns up later looking like the dead, do the partygoers realise something is not right.

Lake Nowhere - Still 27If a potentially undead friend were the only problem, things would not be so bad, but the killer in the woods also shows up to ruin the party. Who will survive this deadly night of terror?

Lake Nowhere wants the viewer to believe the film is a lost, shot on video gem from the early 80s horror craze. Does it succeed? Yes, with bloody flying colours. Not only does the movie ooze ’80s horror, but it also has a 1970s Italian horror vibe bleeding into the film, providing a wonderfully appropriate sleazy look that is to die for.

Lake Nowhere only falters when it comes to storytelling as it clocks in at a very short 51 minutes. The movie does not have much time to establish any character development or plot setup. It cuts to the core rather quickly and leaves the viewer with plenty of questions come the end; however, there is a bit of charm with leaving story threads dangling, because we all know that many horror films back in the day had nothing for proper story conclusions.

Lake Nowhere plasters the screen with copious amounts of the ’80s (and ’70s) horror nostalgia. You will be bleeding from the eyes, but don’t worry, it is a feel good type of bleeding. Fans of slashers and the supernatural will want to check out this flick. It is currently available on VOD and Blu-ray.
