I love me a good ghost movie and the sequel to Insidious does not disappoint. In fact, I thought it did a wonderful job at intertwining the two movies together and really excelled at sending chills down my spine. Let’s roll the dice and see what more the ghosts have to say about this movie…
Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as follows: The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
Tatlock’s Quick ‘n Dirty Recap: After a neat little spooky flashback involving a young and beautiful Elise Rainier (Lindsay Seim) and a young Josh (Garrett Ryan), we flash forward to the present and pick up precisely at the end of the first Insidious. The Lambert family has moved into Josh’s Mother’s house, while the police are investigating the aftermath of the first movie’s ending. It doesn’t take long though for some creepy ghosts to show up and start terrorizing the poor family. However, it seems like Josh (Patrick Wilson) isn’t effected too much by the creeptacular happenings and goes about convincing his wife, Renai (Rose Byrne) and family everything is going to be fine, but in fact, everything isn’t fine, especially in regards to Josh.
Tatlock’s Opinion: If a ghost movie can at least send on average 3 chills up my spine for every half hour the movie is playing, then it has done it’s job. Insidious: Chapter 2 more often than not will keep you curled up under your blankets, with one hand over your eyes, waiting for the chills to subside… for the most part. I’m not saying I personally was cowering under the blankets or anything, but I did have some moments where a few goosebumps showed up to the party.
As for the story, director/writer James Wan and actor/writer Leigh Whannell tone down the strangeness a little compared to the first and sticks to telling more of a straight ghost story, for a good portion of the 106 minute run time. It isn’t until near the end, where we start to investigate a little more of the strange outer world from the first movie, called “The Further.” Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of it in the first one, but with some expansion done on this foggy purgatory, I now think it has some great potential and there definitely is more to it, than what we are being shown. I do have to say though, the movie does stumble a little with it’s own plot, as there are times where you’ll be confused as to who really is doing the haunting. It’s only for a few minutes of the story, but those few scenes, you might be left scratching your head. Don’t worry though, everything is explained come the end.
Verdict: Insidious: Chapter 2 is the perfect sequel, that ties in with the first movie wonderfully. In fact, after watching this one, I immediately wanted to pop in the first one, but I didn’t, as I don’t think my heart could take it. Seriously, this movie will have you scared and that ladies and gentlemen, is all we are asking for. Recommended for fans of the first movie and the movie The Conjuring, which was also directed by James Wan and carries the same kind of tone, especially with the wonderfully haunting music by Joseph Bishara (The Conjuring, Insidious).
