Short Story: “The Promise” |
Sorry for the long delay in posting the final reviews of the Hellbound Hearts short stories, but I finally got around to finishing the collection. So without further ado, here is the review for “The Promise” by Nancy Kilpatrick. A really neat story, but one that once again feels a little too familiar. Read on for the rest of the review…
“The Promise” is about a group of older people that are getting back together on the anniversary of a tragic event, that occurred several years ago. The group use to be a bunch of gothic party people and one night, the party went a little too far when they stumbled upon the Lemarchand burial tomb. Now, on the anniversary night, the group is taught that what transpired that fateful night, is something they will regret for the rest of their short lives.
I really enjoyed “The Promise”, but I felt as though the premise of it was very similar to some of the other stories in this collection, with people striking deals with Cenobites and not realizing that you can never escape them. Still though, even with those similarities, the story does provide a nice little mystery leading up to the end and once again, some really gnarly Cenobites show up.
