I wonder what my younger self would say, if I traveled back in time and told that little annoying bastard that I would someday watch Dr. Giggles in super clear high definition. Well, first I would probably be like, what the hell is high definition and second, I would be like, damn what the hell is with the gray hair? Sadly, time travel hasn’t been invented yet, but sweet, sweet high definition has and that’s right, Dr. Giggles has been released on Blu-ray and boy did it bring back some wonderful memories. So, without further ado, the doctor is in and he’ll see you now…
Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as follows: The psychopathic son of a mass-murdering doctor, escapes from his mental institution to seek revenge on the town where his father was caught. The giggling doctor kills his victims with a surgical theme. His goal being to give one of the townfolk a heart transplant.
Dr. Giggles (Larry Drake) is about to execute some medical revenge on a poor victim. |
Escaped convict, Doctor Evan Rendell, returns to his hometown of Moorehigh and vows to take revenge on the people that wronged his father. Rendell dons his fathers old doctor’s outfit and starts his rampage of terror, mixed with a shit ton of medical puns. I swear, the script must’ve looked like this:
FADE IN:
INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE – NIGHT
Dr. Giggles taunts his newest patient, she screams and tries to run away, but there is no escape.
That ladies and gentlemen is the entirety of Dr. Giggles, but you know what? I had fun. Larry Drake goes to town with his role as the deadly Dr. Giggles, having a blast with the role and just driving those medical puns home so hard, you’ll be in a need of a real doctor. The movie also has some awesome kills and of course, the weapons would have to be medical related, that have been converted into some sort of weird killing machines. Also, you can’t forget the awesome flashback sequence, involving the night shift police officer, who happened to be guarding the dead bodies of Dr. Giggles father’s rampage. What happens that night will probably stay with you for some time.
Jennifer Campbell (Holly Marie Combs) will also stay with you for some time, which is never a bad thing. |
Well, there’s your problem right there. |
Dr. Giggles was a one off slasher film from the early nineties and even on Blu-ray, the movie still holds up fairly nicely. It’s filled with cheesy puns, some awesome kills, a few characters that you will actually care for (Officer Joe Reitzbeing the guy I was rooting for) and a terminal case of multiple ending syndrome, with is just too awesome to describe. It definitely isn’t going to rate high on everyone’s list and even I, who loved the movie, am not going to award it a 5 out of 5 or something crazy like that. Still, even with that said, *INSERT MEDICAL PUN*
