Heavy metal music? Check! Hot chicks? Check! Fantastic gore? Check! Boobies? Quadruple check! DEATHGASM (all caps, cause lowercase is for pussies) is a flick that spews hardcore from its veins. Chalk full of righteous metal, generous amounts of gore, wonderful special effects and a story that’s straight and to the point. DEATHGASM is the heavy metal version of Evil Dead, and I’m loving every minute of it!
PLOT SUMMARY
High School is Hell! Metal-thrashing Brodie is an outcast in a sea of jocks and cheerleaders until he meets a kindred spirit in fellow metalhead Zakk. After starting their own band, Brodie and Zakk s resentment of the suburban wasteland leads them to a mysterious piece of sheet music said to grant Ultimate Power to whoever plays it. But the music also summons an ancient evil entity known as Aeloth The Blind One, who threatens to tear apart existence itself. Their classmates and family become inhabited by demonic forces, tearing out their own eyes and turning into psychotic murderers… and this is only the beginning! It’s up to Brodie, Zakk and their group of friends to stop a force of pure evil from devouring all of mankind.
A blood-soaked and hilarious horror comedy, DEATHGASM features an amazing original soundtrack of fistbanging metal and practical effects to satisfy metalheads and splatter fans alike. DEATHGASM will gush bodily fluids, rain limbs and tickle your funny bone, before tearing it out and giving you a stiff beating with it.
MOVIE
Heavy metal lover Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) has moved in with his church-going relatives, and life is not looking great. His mother went crazy, forcing him to move in with the extended family and his cousin immediately starts picking on him. After a bad day at school; besides meeting the hot Medina (Kimberley Crossman), who happens to be dating his cousin, Brodie heads to the only shop worth going to, the local record store to check out the records. There he meets Zakk (James Blake) and things are never the same from there on. You see, Zakk knows about a certain older rock star and where he lives and after they visit his place, they end up with some old music sheets that supposedly will give the person who plays it infinite fortune and power. However, you need to raise the King of the Demons in order to gain this power. I’m sure you can guess where things go from there, as Demons start rampaging through the town and all hell breaks loose. Cue some amazing gory scenes.
The story for DEATHGASM borrows a lot from other movies, be it the aforementioned Evil Dead and the head thrashing Trick or Treat. It’s definitely not an original flick in the least bit, but I won’t blame it for it, as the story we do get takes all the best parts of both movies mentioned and serves you up something bloody humorous and highly entertaining. DEATHGASM wears its homages on its blood-drenched sleeve and keeps on rocking until the goregasmic end. The performances for DEATHGASM also lend a lot to its enjoyment, as all the performances come through brilliantly, with Milo Cawthorne stealing the show as Brodie, the troubled metal fan. Kimberley Crossman not only looks amazing, but her character Medina is to die for. She brandishes an axe with gusto and doesn’t shy away from the plasma. Another Actor to note is James Blake, who plays Zakk. He easily switches from lovable friend to annoying enemy, back to friend again. He manages to hit all the right notes (puntastic!).
The one negative put against DEATHGASM is the ending, which doesn’t go all out like it should. It felt confined and the King of Hell rising up wasn’t as spectacular as it could have been. Honestly, though, I’m nitpicking here as the movie’s overall enjoyment makes up for anything negative.
VERDICT
DEATHGASM is going to please a lot of gorehounds and metal heads. The music is fantastic, the humour is through the roof and the gore will have you smiling ear to blood filled ear. This is one movie that is worth owning and watching over and over. Long live heavy metal horror!
