After finally getting around to seeing The Avengers in IMAX 3D, my opinion on the movie is broken up into four thoughts. First: IMAX 3D is overpriced and not worth the experience. Second: 3D needs to die a horrible death as quickly as possible. Third: The Avengers was a little too long for my tastes. Fourth: Length problems aside, it was still a kick-ass film!

The Avengers is a film jam packed full of “stuff”, but interestingly enough was still able to drag it’s heels a little during certain parts of the film (when you have a movie with 8 or more superheroes, you would normally expect two hours of mind numbing action). I can let a few slow scenes slide as the film itself was exciting and gorgeous looking. The CGI used in the film blended in nicely, but thanks to some unnecessary 3D some detail was lost. (I look forward to the day when 3D is taken out behind the barn and shot unceremoniously through the back of the head.)
The entire cast of The Avengers puts in a stellar performance hitting all the spots needed, be it humor, drama or action. Not one person was a sore spot in the film, so kudos go out to all involved. I do need to give a shout out to Mark Ruffalo as the new Bruce Banner/The Hulk. I was floored by his performance as the doctor and the eventual big green beast. The CGI used on The Hulk is the best we’ve seen in the Hulk films and I’m hoping we get to see more of this green beast in the near future. I should mention that my wife said there wasn’t enough Thor (she would leave me in a heart beat for Chris Hemsworth*), so fans take note, some heroes are pushed to the side to make room for Iron Man and Captain America.
I’ve heard a few complaints on Captain America’s new mask, I can understand why, but it didn’t bother me. For a film where a majority of the cast is wearing spandex (thankfully Scarlett Johansson isn’t allergic), it looked perfectly fine to me (although I did like his mask from the Captain America movie better).
Conclusion time! If you’re a fan of the previous Marvel films or comics, going to see The Avengers is a no brainer. If you’re not a fan, you may get a little lost with the comic books references, but that doesn’t take away from the film. The Avengers is a treat for all, a definite recommend, but avoid overpriced 3D because it doesn’t add anything to The Avengers experience.
